"When it happened a second time, I thought I might lose my sight, not just in that eye but in the other one as well.

I started having blackouts every couple of days. They would last for half an hour or an hour at a time. I found it difficult walking around with only one eye working normally and kept bumping into things.

I went to an optician, who told me I would have to consult an eye specialist urgently. I only had to wait a couple of weeks for an NHS consultant because I had a serious problem. It was an anxious time.

The consultant recommended that I go to George Turner at Manchester Eye Hospital.

One of my main worries was becoming a burden to my sister Marjorie, with whom I share a home. Caring for a blind man would be a huge responsibility."
