"THE PATIENT
My eyesight had always been A1 in all my years as a cricket umpire and I'd never needed glasses. Even when I retired in 1998, my eyes were still perfect.
But I became concerned that something was wrong with my left eye about 18 months ago. The vision started to become blurred and objects with straight edges appeared misshapen.
At first I ignored it. I put it down to tiredness and the work involved in writing my latest book.
But over the period of a few months, the blurriness in the eye became more frequent.
Then one day my sight went completely. I couldn't see anything out of that eye for 15 minutes and I panicked."
