"UP TO 40 per cent of Australian tennis umpires and line judges - branded 'useless' by Lleyton Hewitt this week - have flawed vision, a sports vision expert says.
Patrick Gerry said 11 of the top 24 chair umpires he tested for Tennis Australia before the 2006 Australian Open failed, but the governing body ignored his recommendations.
The most common reason for failing the test was poor depth perception, which is critical when judging whether a ball is in or out.
'Poor depth perception does affect the person's ability to determine where something is … It's absolutely critical in deciding if the ball is in or out.
'The umpires have definite issues that Tennis Australia has known about for two years and have chosen to do nothing about … Their depth perception problems have been identified and I can't believe Tennis Australia has failed to follow up and correct it.
Mr Gerry, who has worked with the Australian Institute of Sport, Cricket Australia, the AFL, and NRL clubs and umpires, said the tennis umpires' problems identified during the test two years ago could be rectified within weeks."
