"Dickie Bird, one of the most famous umpires in the history of cricket, retired in 1998 after a 30-year career.
About 18 months ago, his sight began to deteriorate badly in one eye. Dickie, 69, who is single and lives with his sister Marjorie near Barnsley, Yorkshire, had developed epiretinal membrane - a condition caused by ageing - that could have left him blind.
Here, he tells us how an operation on his retina saved his sight, and his surgeon describes the procedure."
