Catriona Walpole of Stopsley thought her painful migraine could be related to the fact that she'd broken her glasses and couldn't afford to replace them.

She booked a routine test where sharp-eyed optometrist Umesh picked up a rare condition that could have left her blind.

Catriona was admitted to the Luton & Dunstable Hospital as an emergency patient where she was diagnosed with benign intercranial hypertension. After a barrage of tests and a lumbar puncture she is now feeling much better and eager to resume her normal life as a water company customer service representative.

Her consultant said he was very impressed that opticians were obviously doing their job properly.

Shocked and relieved that the condition was picked up so quickly, Catriona said: 'You'd never believe that going for a simple eye test could end up saving your sight.'"
